Federal-Provincial Training Agreement Strengthens Economic Growth
Employment Ontario Doubles Resources, Adds New Training Programs
TORONTO, Jan. 2 /CNW/ - Almost one million Ontario workers and businesses will benefit from close to $1 billion in training and employment services through Employment Ontario as a result of the Canada-Ontario Labour Market Development Agreement, announced Chris Bentley, Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities. The agreement, effective January 1, 2007, transfers many federal training and employment programs, resources and staff to the province. "Employment Ontario will now, more than ever, be the place to start for your employment and training needs - it will be a one-stop shop," said Bentley. "We will be able to reduce gaps and make the system both more flexible and effective with this transfer."
The transfer of programs means Ontarians will get: - More resources: $525 million in transferred federal programming every year will combine with $360 million in Ontario programs - More service: people and businesses served yearly will grow from more than 500,000 to 900,000 - More locations: the number of third-party service providers will grow from 470 to 1200 in all regions of the province
All Ontarians will benefit from a fuller range of connected training and employment services, in particular: - Employers, who will get expanded services to help them find the workers they need and to encourage their investment in skills development - Job-threatened or laid-off workers, who will benefit from better coordination and availability of services - Employers, workers, newcomers, and youth, who will get more flexible programs that support life-long learning to meet changing needs.
The agreement also results in easy access to services through: - In-person referrals between community-based program deliverers offering employment services to better meet your needs - Free hotline - 1.800.387.5656 - with expanded referral ability for all Employment Ontario services - Easy to use website - www.ontario.ca/employmentontario with updated training and employment information in communities across the province - Multilingual program information in 21 languages in addition to English and French - French language services that are supported and expanded.
"Thanks to Employment Ontario''s "no wrong door" service delivery model, WoodGreen Community Services has been re-aligning its employment and immigrant services," said Brian Smith, President and CEO of WoodGreen Community Services. "With the long-awaited implementation of the Ontario-Canada LMDA, we can now integrate the intake, assessment, referral and programming components of our adult Employment Resource Centres, our youth Job Connect center, and our Immigrant Services Settlement Center, into a seamless continuum of services.
